Come, Let Us Sing to the Lord!
The Psalms are songs and prayers written in the language of Hebrew poetry. They give voice to praise and thanksgiving, sorrow and lament, trust and longing, while continually directing our attention back to the character and works of God. But poetry is meant to be read differently than history or a New Testament letter. As you study Psalms from several different genres, you’ll learn to recognize features such as parallelism, imagery, symbolism, stanzas, and refrains and consider how those features help communicate the psalmist’s message.
Along the way, you’ll practice the foundational skills of inductive Bible study: observing what the text actually says, interpreting it in its context, using Scripture to help you understand Scripture, and responding personally to the truth you discover. The goal isn’t simply to understand the Psalms in this study. It’s to equip you to open another Psalm, slow down, look carefully, and study it for yourself.
